The Hotel Wireless Story: A Tale of Two Cities
In 2004 we were to be among 32 million people visiting Las Vegas, The Entertainment Capital of the World. In a city with more than 130,000 guest rooms and nine million square feet of convention and exhibit space, we didn't think finding a room with a good Internet connection would be a problem.
It wasn't a problem. It was a nightmare.
Casino web sites were unclear about the Internet connections being provided and their related costs. We talked to a six Las Vegas booking agents, and none could confirm a high-speed connection. We ended up calling a dozen casinos until we found one where the reservation agent thought she remembered seeing something on top of the TV. On further investigation, she determined we could have unlimited high-speed Internet in our room for about $30 per night -- an additional $150 per room during our stay. We booked our rooms and hoped for the best.
In Las Vegas the buffets were great but the Internet service was marginal.
The high-speed connection at our casino worked in one of the two rooms we booked. It disconnected frequently during use. No technical support was provided. Other convention goers had similar lacking experiences.
Less than a month later, we were visiting a client in San Francisco. On the recommendation of our client, we stayed at the Westin Hotel near the airport which offered a great room and wireless high-speed Internet. We were able to tote our laptops to the restaurant, bar, pool and semi-public meeting spaces throughout the facility and have access online.
We were hooked. Hotel Wireless was born.
As a visitor to this site, please consider listing and ranking the hotels you.ve learned about in your travels and in your hometown that provide reliable high-speed internet. Let others benefit from your knowledge. If you.re new to business travel, benefit from theirs.
We wish everyone a good trip and a good connection.
